Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed the development, stating, “An agreement has been reached on patrolling arrangements along the LAC in the border regions, which will lead to disengagement and address the issues that emerged in these areas in 2020.”

India and China have reportedly reached a significant agreement concerning patrolling along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), potentially ending the four-year-long standoff in the Eastern Ladakh region. The Ministry of External Affairs announced that both countries have agreed on new patrolling arrangements, paving the way for disengagement in the area.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri shared that Indian and Chinese diplomatic and military negotiators have been engaged in continuous discussions, which have led to this breakthrough. “After weeks of close contact between Indian and Chinese negotiators, an agreement has been reached on patrolling along the LAC, which could result in disengagement and resolution of the issues that arose in 2020,” Misri stated.

It is believed that the agreement covers patrolling in the contentious Depsang and Demchok areas.

The timing of this announcement is notable, as it comes just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kazan, Russia, for the BRICS Summit, where Chinese President Xi Jinping will also be present.

The standoff between India and China has been ongoing since the deadly 2020 Galwan Valley clash, which marked the worst border conflict between the two nations in four decades, resulting in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers and an unknown number of Chinese troops.

Last month, The Indian Express reported that both countries had made “significant progress” on various LAC issues, with discussions centering around restoring the respective pre-April 2020 positions. This agreement would also grant Indian forces access to previously restricted patrolling points, which had been blocked by Chinese troops or restricted due to buffer zones established during earlier disengagement efforts.
