After Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential elections, reactions from around the world have been mixed. While some countries are uneasy about his return to power, it’s clear that his win could shift global geopolitics, particularly affecting the leaders of Ukraine, Canada, and Bangladesh.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Troubles:
One country particularly concerned about Trump’s victory is Canada. Trudeau, who has been outspoken against India in the wake of the killing of pro-Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, may face increased challenges from Trump. Musk, a vocal Trump supporter, even hinted at Trudeau’s political downfall in the next elections. It’s speculated that Trump could take significant action against Trudeau, particularly regarding his stance on Khalistan.
Furthermore, Trudeau’s government is also worried about the economic impact. Canada heavily relies on the U.S. for exports, and Trump’s potential to raise tariffs could harm Canada’s economy. During his previous term, Trump renegotiated the North American Free Trade Agreement and even considered a 25% tariff on the auto industry, which posed a major concern for Canada.
Bangladesh’s Mohammad Yunus and Trump’s Presidency:
Bangladesh’s Caretaker Government leader, Mohammad Yunus, is also unsettled by Trump’s win. Yunus, considered an ally of the U.S., particularly the Biden administration, might find the relationship between the U.S. and Bangladesh changing under Trump. Yunus, known for his left-leaning ideologies, may struggle to maintain favorable relations with Trump. In fact, during Trump’s earlier term, relations were tense, and Trump even made disparaging remarks about Yunus, calling him “the micro-financier of Dhaka” and mentioning that he had donated to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign in an effort to see Trump defeated.
Ukrainian President Zelensky’s Woes:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also facing uncertain times. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the U.S. and Europe have supported Ukraine’s defense efforts. However, with a change in leadership in the U.S., the future of U.S.-Ukraine relations could be in jeopardy, with the possibility of military aid ending. Trump has already made remarks about Zelensky, calling him a “great salesman” for bringing millions of dollars in aid to Ukraine during his visits to the U.S. Trump’s campaign also indicated that this dynamic could shift. After his victory, Trump and Zelensky briefly spoke, but the conversation was reportedly overheard by Elon Musk, adding another layer of tension.
Overall, these three leaders may find their positions increasingly precarious as Trump reclaims the presidency, with potential shifts in international relations and economic policies ahead.
