Junior Doctors Strike in Support of Female Doctor’s Rape and Murder at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, FAIMA Announces Nationwide Protest

Junior doctors at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College are on strike, protesting against the rape and murder of a female doctor. The protests have not subsided, and now doctors across the country are preparing to unite in solidarity. The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has announced a nationwide strike of resident doctors starting Monday, following a meeting held on Saturday. However, FAIMA has requested all Resident Doctors’ Associations (RDAs) to ensure that emergency services remain operational 24/7 during the strike.

In a statement, FAIMA expressed its full support for the junior doctors of West Bengal. The organization said, “After thorough deliberation, we have unanimously decided that the time has come for nationwide solidarity. We had previously given an ultimatum to the Chief Minister of West Bengal in our letter, urging action, but no satisfactory response has been received. This has forced us to call on all RDAs and medical associations across the country to join our protest and suspend elective services from Monday onwards.”

This open letter was addressed to national medical associations, state Resident Doctors’ Associations (RDAs), and RDAs from various medical colleges and institutions of national importance. The letter emphasized, “We request all RDAs and associations to keep emergency services open 24/7 to ensure that patients in need of urgent care do not suffer.”

The junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have been on a hunger strike since October 5, demanding justice for the deceased female doctor and addressing other related issues. Due to the hunger strike, the health of three doctors deteriorated, and they had to be hospitalized.
