The Israel Defense Forces have stated that three Hamas terrorists were killed in an attack in Gaza, and one of them could possibly be Yahya Sinwar. An investigation is currently underway to confirm his identity.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have made a significant claim, stating that during an operation in Gaza, they killed three terrorists. Among them, the IDF claims, was Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas. After nearly four hours, the IDF confirmed that Sinwar was indeed killed, following a DNA test that confirmed his identity. This is considered a major blow to Hamas, as Sinwar is currently the group’s leader. If this claim proves true, it would be a considerable achievement for Israel, as they assert that Sinwar was one of the masterminds behind the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the nation following this development. The IDF also confirmed the news on their official X (formerly Twitter) handle, though earlier, a handle named “Mossad Commentary” had already claimed Sinwar’s death. In the evening, the IDF posted on X that there was a possibility Sinwar was among the three terrorists killed during the operation, though his identity had yet to be confirmed at that time. They noted that no signs of hostages were found in the building where the terrorists were killed, and IDF forces were proceeding with caution.

Yahya Sinwar was appointed as Hamas’ political leader after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the former Hamas commander, on August 7, 2023. Sinwar, often referred to as “Gaza’s bin Laden,” was seen as one of the masterminds of the October 7 attacks on Israel. After his appointment, Israel vowed to eliminate him, calling it a matter of time before Sinwar would meet the same fate as Haniyeh.

When Hamas announced Sinwar’s leadership, they stated, “The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas announces the selection of Commander Yahya Sinwar as the head of its Political Bureau, replacing the martyred Commander Ismail Haniyeh. May Allah have mercy on him.”

Sinwar’s appointment was the result of a collective decision by Hamas’ 50-member Shura Council. This council, which serves as an advisory body, consists of members from four segments: Gaza, the West Bank, Palestinians in Israeli prisons, and Palestinians living abroad.

Israel had labeled Sinwar as “the devil” after the October 7 attacks, accusing him of orchestrating the assaults. Following Israel’s retaliation, Sinwar reportedly went into hiding with his family in a network of tunnels beneath Gaza. The IDF had earlier released a video claiming to show Sinwar and his family entering these tunnels and had issued a death warrant for him. The IDF spokesperson, Daniel Hagari, commented that Sinwar’s only destination would be “next to Mohammed Deif and the other terrorists responsible for October 7″—implying death. Last week, Israel confirmed the killing of Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif.

Sinwar, known as “Hamas’ bin Laden,” had long been trusted by the group due to his extensive experience fighting against Israel. He spent 23 years in Israeli prisons, where he learned Hebrew fluently. He was released in 2011 as part of a prisoner exchange deal that saw 1,027 Palestinian prisoners freed in exchange for captured IDF soldier Gilad Shalit. Sinwar later became a senior commander in Hamas’ military wing and was seen as one of its most experienced and powerful leaders following Haniyeh’s death.

Born in the Khan Yunis refugee camp in southern Gaza, Sinwar joined Hamas in 1987 during the First Intifada (Palestinian uprising). His deep involvement in Hamas’ operations over the years earned him a reputation as one of the group’s most formidable figures.
