
Maharashtra and Jharkhand Assembly Elections: The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the dates for the upcoming assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand on Tuesday, 15th October. Voting in Maharashtra will take place on 20th November, while Jharkhand will see polling in two phases on 13th November and 20th November. The counting of votes for both states will be held on 23rd November.
It is important to note that the term of Maharashtra’s 288-member assembly will end on 26th November, while the tenure of Jharkhand’s assembly is set to expire on 5th January next year. In Maharashtra, the main contest is expected to be between the Maha Vikas Aghadi (Shiv Sena-UBT, NCP-Sharad Pawar faction, Congress) and the ruling Mahayuti alliance (BJP, Shiv Sena-Eknath Shinde faction, NCP-Ajit Pawar faction).
Meanwhile, the tenure of the Jharkhand assembly will end on 5th January 2025, with elections scheduled in two phases, covering 81 constituencies (44 general, 9 SC, 28 ST) on 13th and 20th November. In contrast, the 2019 Jharkhand elections were held in five phases.
