Witnesses reported that the safety alarm did not go off when the fire broke out. As smoke began to spread, chaos ensued. If the safety alarm had sounded in time, the rescue operations could have started sooner.

In the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), safety alarms were installed to prevent fire hazards, but witnesses claim that the alarm failed to activate when the fire occurred. The smoke rapidly spread, and panic erupted. Had the alarm functioned properly, emergency procedures could have been initiated more swiftly.

The fire in the NICU spread quickly and reached the doors within minutes, blocking access to the room. Firefighters attempted to enter from the back, but they were unsuccessful. They eventually broke the window to gain entry. Inside, the room was filled with smoke and flames. It took about half an hour before rescue efforts began. Fortunately, the newborns on the ground floor were evacuated, but if the incident had occurred on another floor, the rescue operation would have been much more difficult. The NICU has two units: one inside and one outside. The babies in the outer unit were rescued first, while those inside were severely burned. Some of the children in the inner unit could not be saved.

In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took note of the incident and instructed district administration officials to ensure proper treatment for the injured. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, who also oversees the health department, expressed his grief and stated he would visit Jhansi.

An official statement mentioned that Pathak was accompanied by the state’s principal health secretary, Adityanath, as per the Chief Minister’s instructions.

The statement further noted that Chief Minister Yogi has directed the Divisional Commissioner Bimal Kumar Dubey and the Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Jhansi range, Kalanidhi Nathani, to submit a report on the matter within 12 hours.Anurag Sharma, the Member of Parliament for Jhansi, expressed his sorrow over the incident. He said he was currently out of the station, and shortly after the tragedy, local MLA Ravi Sharma visited the hospital to assess the situation.

On Saturday morning, SSP Sudha Singh informed reporters that 16 injured children were receiving medical treatment, and efforts to save their lives were ongoing. She assured that sufficient medical facilities and doctors were available for their care.
