The Sharad Pawar-led NCP has officially announced Yogendra Pawar’s candidacy from Baramati, setting up a direct contest against his uncle, Ajit Pawar.

The Baramati assembly constituency is set to become the center of a major political showdown in the upcoming state elections, with two members of the Pawar family competing head-to-head. The Sharad Pawar-led NCP has announced that Yogendra Pawar will contest from Baramati, where he will face off against his uncle, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, in what is being called a “Pawar vs. Pawar” battle.

In the recent Lok Sabha elections, a similar contest took place when NCP’s Supriya Sule went up against Sunetra Pawar, Ajit Pawar’s wife. Supriya Sule won by a margin of 1.4 lakh votes, with Sunetra trailing by over 40,000 votes in the Baramati assembly segment, a seat Ajit Pawar has held for seven terms.

Following the Lok Sabha results, Ajit Pawar voiced his disappointment with Baramati’s voters, hinting he might consider running in a different constituency. He expressed frustration that, despite significant development work and resources brought to Baramati, the voters had still chosen not to support his wife.

While speculation about Ajit Pawar’s candidacy grew, the NCP officially confirmed that he would once again run from Baramati. Meanwhile, Yogendra Pawar, son of Ajit’s brother Srinivas Pawar, has emerged as a challenger. Following the family and party split, Srinivas supported Sharad Pawar and Supriya Sule in the Lok Sabha elections, with Yogendra and his mother also campaigning for Sule in Baramati.

On Thursday, the NCP faction loyal to Sharad Pawar confirmed Yogendra’s candidacy from Baramati, setting up a highly anticipated face-off with Ajit Pawar.
