The United States has indicated that it seeks “meaningful accountability” from India regarding the purported attempt to assassinate Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. In response to the allegations made by the US, India established an inquiry committee to examine the situation.

NEW DELHI: The United States has expressed that it will not be fully content until there is “meaningful accountability” stemming from India’s investigations into the thwarted assassination attempt on Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun within the US.

“We continue to expect and seek accountability based on the findings of that investigation, and the United States won’t be completely satisfied until there is meaningful accountability resulting from that inquiry,” stated Vedant Patel, Deputy Spokesperson for the State Department, on Wednesday.

Patel’s remarks followed the recent visit of an Indian investigation team to the United States for discussions.

The Indian government has denied any involvement in or connection to the alleged plot to assassinate Pannun on American soil. In response to accusations from the US, New Delhi formed the inquiry committee to look into the issue.

An Indian national, Nikhil Gupta, was extradited to the US after being arrested in Prague last summer. Recently, the US identified another Indian, Vikas Yadav, as the supposed mastermind behind the murder-for-hire scheme that authorities claim to have disrupted.

India has stated that the individual referred to as CC1, later identified as Yadav, is no longer employed by the government.
