Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a minimum support price (MSP) of ₹6,000 per quintal for soybean, bringing significant relief to farmers in Maharashtra, particularly in the Vidarbha and Marathwada regions. These areas, which include districts like Washim, Buldhana, Akola, Amravati, Yavatmal, Wardha, Nagpur, Chandrapur, and Bhandara, are major hubs for soybean cultivation. This cash crop is typically sown before Diwali, providing farmers with an opportunity to earn during the festive season.
In recent times, many farmers in these regions have faced challenges due to fluctuating market prices and unfavorable conditions. The Maharashtra government had previously stepped in with measures like financial assistance of ₹5,000 for distressed farmers. Additionally, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis introduced the Bhavantar Yojana, which compensates farmers for the difference between market rates and the MSP. While these initiatives offered some support, the new MSP announcement by the Prime Minister has brought renewed hope to soybean growers.
Soybean farming plays a critical role in the rural economy of Maharashtra, particularly during and after the festive season. A farmer from Buldhana district expressed gratitude, stating, “The new MSP has provided much-needed relief during this crucial time and gives us hope for a more secure future.
”The combination of central and state-level interventions, such as the Bhavantar Yojana and the enhanced MSP, is expected to stabilize the market and encourage higher production. Traders and farmers alike are optimistic about the potential market improvements following this government initiative.
This decision underscores the commitment of the Mahayuti alliance to improving farmers’ livelihoods and boosting agricultural output. By addressing both immediate financial concerns and long-term market stability, the initiative is set to strengthen the economic foundation of soybean farmers across Maharashtra, fostering a brighter future for the agricultural community.
