The primary accused, Sanjay Roy, asserting that senior police officials, including former city police commissioner Vineet Goyal, orchestrated a setup against him. Roy, who appeared in court, later claimed outside the courtroom that he had been wrongfully implicated by these senior officers.

The trial in the case of a doctor’s rape and murder began on Monday in a Kolkata court, three months after her body was discovered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The proceedings, held in-camera before additional district and sessions judge Anirban Das, saw prime accused Sanjay Roy in attendance.

Outside the court, Roy alleged he was set up by senior police officials, specifically naming former police commissioner Vineet Goyal. The victim’s father was also present as a witness, according to police sources.

During his appearance, Roy reiterated his claim of being falsely accused, asserting that he had no role in the crime. He further alleged that high-ranking officers were involved in framing him and that the administration was backing their efforts. “I wasn’t allowed to speak,” Roy told reporters as he was taken away. “They are conspiring against me, and the government is supporting them.”

The charges against Roy include Section 64 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (rape), Section 66 (causing death or a persistent vegetative state), and Section 103 (murder). His arrest on August 10 by Kolkata Police came a day after the doctor’s body was found at the hospital. Later, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the case following a directive from the Calcutta High Court.

The incident has sparked widespread national outrage.
