Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his anticipation for “meaningful” discussions at the upcoming G20 Summit in Brazil. The summit, scheduled for November 18-19 in Rio de Janeiro, will focus on the agenda established during India’s presidency of the G20 last year. In a statement issued before his five-day trip to Nigeria, Brazil, and Guyana, PM Modi highlighted the importance of the summit and his commitment to advancing global priorities.
PM Modi will first visit Nigeria before heading to Brazil to participate in the 19th G20 Summit as a member of the G20 Troika. Reflecting on India’s presidency, he stated, “India’s successful leadership turned the G20 into a people-centric initiative and integrated the priorities of the Global South into its agenda.” Leaders such as Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden will also attend the summit.
Enhancing Bilateral Cooperation
The Prime Minister emphasized Brazil’s continuation of India’s legacy during its presidency and expressed his hopes for productive discussions. “I look forward to meaningful dialogues that align with our vision of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future,'” he said, adding that he plans to explore opportunities for strengthening bilateral ties with other leaders during the summit.
India’s achievements during its presidency, including the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent G20 member and fostering consensus despite challenges like the Ukraine conflict, were key milestones recognized globally.
PM Modi’s Visit to Nigeria
PM Modi described his visit to Nigeria as an opportunity to deepen the strategic partnership based on shared beliefs in democracy and pluralism. On November 16-17, he will travel to Nigeria at the invitation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “This will be my first visit to Nigeria, a close partner in the West African region,” he said, adding that he looks forward to meeting the Indian community and friends in Nigeria who extended warm greetings in Hindi.
Historic Visit to Guyana
In the final leg of his tour, PM Modi will visit Guyana from November 19-21 at the invitation of President Mohamed Irfaan Ali. This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Guyana in over five decades. “We aim to chart a strategic direction for our unique relationship, rooted in shared heritage, culture, and values,” Modi stated. He also highlighted his intention to pay tribute to one of the oldest Indian diaspora communities, who arrived in Guyana over 185 years ago. Additionally, he will address the Guyanese Parliament to engage with their democratic institutions.
