The political turmoil over the violence in Manipur has intensified, with the National People’s Party (NPP) withdrawing its support from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in the state. Following the NPP’s decision, Congress took a jab at the BJP, with Congress MP Kunwar Danish Ali remarking, “The sun rises in the East,” implying the BJP’s political decline in the region. He further suggested that this might be the beginning of a larger trend, predicting that other BJP allies like JD(U) and TDP could follow suit, ultimately leading to the fall of the Modi government.
Congress Criticizes BJP
Danish Ali accused the BJP of making grand promises to gain power but failing to deliver on them. Highlighting the deteriorating situation in Manipur, he stated, “They have no interest in resolving issues but are instead focused on divisive politics.” Ali speculated that one day, news might break of BJP allies like JD(U) or TDP withdrawing support, destabilizing the central government.
Manipur Congress leader K Meghachandra echoed similar sentiments. He expressed willingness to take drastic steps, saying, “If the people of Manipur believe that a new mandate is necessary for restoring peace, I, along with all Congress MLAs, am ready to resign from our positions.”
NPP’s Stance on the Manipur Crisis
NPP legislator and National Secretary for Political Affairs, Sheikh Nurul Hassan, cited the failure of Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s government as the reason for withdrawing support. He pointed out that the law and order situation in the state had completely collapsed under the BJP-led administration. Hassan highlighted that there is no roadmap for restoring peace or normalcy in the state, which has been grappling with violence and unrest for the past 18 months.
Referring to a letter issued by NPP’s National President Conrad Sangma, Hassan explained that the NPP could no longer stand by as the people’s trust in governance has eroded. “We were supporting the BJP-led government without any conditions, but now we stand with the people. The government’s failure to address the ongoing crisis has forced us to take this step,” he stated.
He reaffirmed that the NPP remains a part of the NDA alliance but emphasized the need to prioritize the wishes and well-being of the people in Manipur.
