Silchar/Imphal: The decomposed bodies of two children and a woman were found near the Manipur-Assam border on Friday, days after six members of a Meitei family were abducted by suspected militants in Jiribam. The bodies, located 15-20km from the abduction site, are yet to be identified, with DNA testing planned if necessary. Earlier, two civilians’ bodies were recovered in Jiribam following a gunfight where security forces killed 10 suspected militants.
Manipur continues to face unrest since May last year, with fresh violence erupting after the reimposition of AFSPA in certain areas. Protests have emerged across tribal and Meitei communities, with tribal groups alleging human rights violations and Meitei organisations opposing AFSPA’s return. Both groups demand accountability and justice from the government. Meanwhile, families of those killed in the gunfight protested at Silchar Medical College, demanding the release of the bodies, as calls for intervention from PM Modi and CM N Biren Singh intensified.
