Kerala Assembly Unanimously Opposes ‘One Nation, One Poll’ in Key Resolution

The Kerala Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on Thursday opposing the ‘One Nation, One Poll’ proposal, citing concerns over federalism, state rights, and the potential threat to democratic principles.

The resolution, presented by Parliamentary Affairs Minister MB Rajesh in the absence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, condemned the central government’s push for simultaneous elections. Rajesh argued that the proposal would undermine India’s federal structure and erode the constitutional autonomy of state governments and local self-government bodies.

Opposition leaders, led by MLA N Samsudheen, fully supported the resolution, echoing concerns about the impact on state governance and calling the proposal an attack on democratic diversity. Despite some amendments suggested by the opposition, the assembly remained united in its opposition to the ‘One Nation, One Election’ plan, which has also been criticized by other states such as West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.

The resolution marks a significant stand from Kerala, as the debate over the simultaneous election proposal continues to gain momentum across the country.
