KYIV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed on Friday that Russia’s war against Ukraine could reach an earlier conclusion if Donald Trump assumes the presidency next year.
“The war will undoubtedly end sooner with the policies of the new team set to lead the White House. This is their strategy, their promise to their voters,” Zelensky remarked during an interview with Ukrainian news outlet Suspilne.
While he acknowledged that a specific timeline remains unknown, Zelensky reiterated, “The war will end, but we don’t know the exact date.”
Zelensky also noted having a “constructive exchange” with Trump during a recent phone call following Trump’s presidential election victory.
“I didn’t hear anything that contradicts our stance,” he mentioned.
Throughout his campaign, Trump has been critical of the extensive financial aid directed to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion began in February 2022. He has vowed to resolve the conflict “within 24 hours,” although he has not elaborated on the specifics of this plan.
Speaking at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, on Friday, Trump stated, “We’re going to work very hard on the Russia-Ukraine situation. It has to come to an end.”
Amid these developments, there is growing concern in Ukraine about a potential decrease in US support, especially at a time when Ukrainian troops are facing significant challenges on the battlefield. The fear is that waning support could lead to pressure for territorial concessions to Russia.
