Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to receive Nigeria’s prestigious Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) award, becoming the second foreign leader to be honored with this distinction after Queen Elizabeth II in 1969. This recognition marks the 17th international award conferred upon PM Modi by a foreign nation.
The announcement coincided with PM Modi’s arrival in Abuja, Nigeria, as part of his three-nation tour, which also includes visits to Brazil and Guyana. This trip aims to strengthen India’s strategic partnership with Nigeria, a relationship that has seen significant growth over recent years.
Upon his arrival in Abuja, Prime Minister Modi was warmly greeted by Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, the Nigerian Minister for the Federal Capital Territory, who also presented him with the ceremonial ‘Key to the City’ of Abuja.
Strengthening India-Nigeria Relations
Ahead of his visit, PM Modi highlighted the importance of India-Nigeria ties in a statement, emphasizing the shared values of democracy and pluralism that underpin their relationship. “At the invitation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, this will be my first visit to Nigeria, a key partner in West Africa. This visit offers an opportunity to enhance our Strategic Partnership. I also look forward to engaging with the Indian community and friends from Nigeria who have extended a warm welcome,” the statement read.
India and Nigeria have enjoyed robust bilateral ties, characterized by cooperation in various sectors, including economic development, energy, and defense. Over 200 Indian companies have invested more than $27 billion in Nigeria, underscoring India’s commitment as a trusted development partner.
This visit by PM Modi is the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Nigeria in 17 years, signifying the importance of deepening relations between the two nations.
