Manchester United have parted ways with manager Erik ten Hag after a disappointing start to the season, the club announced on Monday. Currently sitting a disappointing 14th in the Premier League, United suffered their fourth league loss in nine matches against West Ham on Sunday, with only one victory in their past eight matches across all competitions.

“Erik ten Hag has stepped down from his position as Manchester United men’s first-team manager,” read the club’s statement. “Appointed in April 2022, Erik led the team to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. We thank Erik for his contributions and wish him all the best for the future.”

Ruud van Nistelrooy will step in as interim head coach, working alongside the current coaching staff, while the club searches for a permanent replacement.

Ten Hag’s tenure had been under scrutiny, especially after United’s worst start to a league season since 1989/90. Despite the FA Cup victory over Manchester City in May, co-owner Jim Ratcliffe decided to keep him on. However, recent results proved too difficult to ignore, leading to this managerial change.
