Tragedy struck the football world as George Baldock, the former Premier League defender, was found dead in his swimming pool on Wednesday. The 31-year-old, who played for Panathinaikos and was a member of the Greek national team, was discovered at his home in Glyfada, a suburb of southern Athens. Reports indicate that he was “at the bottom of the pool,” and a bottle of alcohol was found nearby.
Baldock’s wife, who was abroad at the time, alerted the property owner after failing to reach him by phone. Emergency services arrived promptly, and a coroner has been called to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
Baldock had joined Panathinaikos in May 2024 after a successful seven-year stint with Sheffield United, where he earned the nickname “Furious George” due to his tenacious playing style. He had made 12 appearances for the Greek national team since his call-up in 2022 but was unable to participate in the upcoming Nations League match against England due to injury. Just a few days prior, he played 75 minutes in a 0-0 draw against Olympiacos.
Following the news of his passing, numerous clubs and football organizations expressed their condolences. Sheffield United, his former club, paid tribute by changing their homepage to feature a black-and-white photo of Baldock with the message, “RIP George Baldock.” Other teams, including Northampton and MK Dons, where Baldock began his career, also shared heartfelt messages mourning the loss of the player.
Manchester United’s Harry Maguire and the Football Association in England joined the chorus of tributes, extending their thoughts and condolences to Baldock’s family, friends, and teammates during this difficult time. Baldock is remembered not only for his contributions on the field but also as a beloved figure in the football community.
