Rachel Gupta, a 20-year-old from Jalandhar, Punjab, has made history as the first Indian and only the third Asian to be crowned Miss Grand International.

Speaking from Bangkok, Rachel shared her excitement: “Bringing this achievement to my country fills me with immense pride. Winning the crown is just the beginning; the real challenge is to prove myself as a worthy queen, and I am dedicated to that goal.”

The 12th edition of the pageant saw participation from 68 contestants, with the final stage held in Bangkok, Thailand, on October 25. Each contestant reached the pageant either through national competitions or special selections. Rachel, who had already won the Miss Grand India 2024 title organized by the Galamanand Group, was also awarded sub-titles including Miss Top Model, Best in Ramp Walk, Beauty with Purpose, and Best National Costume.

Shamkhan A, the show director for Miss Grand India 2024, praised Rachel’s talent and preparation, noting her poise, stage presence, and performance: “She was a standout performer, deserving of this win.”

Rachel’s journey in modeling began in 2022 when, at 18, she won the title of Miss SuperTalent of the World in Paris. Her road to this recent title involved multiple rounds, including a swimsuit and sportswear segment, a national costume parade, and a preliminary interview session.

Rachel was crowned by the outgoing titleholder, Luciana Fuster of Peru. The Miss Grand International team celebrated her on social media, noting, “She embodies beauty, elegance, and true talent.”

In her final speech, Rachel called on global leaders to “stop fighting and start respecting each other” to ensure sufficient resources for everyone on the planet. Christine Juliane Opiaza of the Philippines, Thae Su Nyein of Myanmar, and Safietou Kabengele of France were named runners-up.

Rachel reflects on her journey and emphasizes the hard work behind the glamour: “The preparation was intense, involving training in walking, speaking, posture, and more. It may seem glamorous from the outside, but there’s immense dedication in each detail.”

Rachel’s entry into modeling was unexpected; despite excelling academically with plans for an Ivy League education, she and her sister auditioned for top modeling agencies in India on a whim and both received offers. With her family’s support, she chose to follow her dreams.

Reflecting on the industry, she sees India’s modeling scene as progressive and professional, with events well-organized and efficient. Moving forward, she aims to use her title to make a positive impact globally and inspire others.

Her advice to aspiring models and young dreamers: “Follow your passion. When you’re pursuing something that brings happiness and fulfillment, success will follow. Don’t let the world’s practicalities limit your dreams. If you can envision it, you can achieve it.”
