The Kerala government is set to launch a 10-seater water taxi service in Alappuzha district, starting in October. Alappuzha, a popular tourist destination in Kerala, attracts millions of domestic and international visitors throughout the year. The government believes that this water taxi service will allow tourists to enjoy the natural beauty of the region more conveniently.

The Kerala State Water Transport Department (SWTD) is introducing four 10-seater water taxis that will operate in the district’s canals and rivers. According to the department, these water taxis can be booked just like a regular taxi. Passengers will need to call a designated number and provide their location, and the water taxi will arrive to pick them up.

The fare for the water taxi will be charged on an hourly basis and is said to be more affordable than buses or auto rickshaws. The taxis will run on diesel, with a top speed of 15 nautical miles per hour, and can carry up to 10 passengers at a time. The service will connect major stations within the city and smaller stations as well, making it accessible to a wider population.

The boats are being constructed by Navgathi, a Kochi-based boat-building company. One of their electric boats recently received the prestigious Gustave Trouv├й Award. These high-speed water taxis consume only 30 liters of diesel per hour, and they are equipped with power steering and solar panels to continuously charge the battery. This innovative service is expected to provide both tourists and locals with a more eco-friendly and efficient mode of transportation.
