India’s eco-tourism set for rapid growth by 2027 with market size reaching $4.55 billion

India’s eco-tourism sector is poised for substantial growth, with projections indicating a market size of $4.55 billion by 2027, driven by a 15.7% annual growth rate from 2019. The rise in eco-tourism is prompting many hotels and lodges to adopt Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) frameworks to meet the demands of eco-conscious travelers. A notable example is the Chambal Safari Lodge, situated within the National Chambal Sanctuary, which has championed sustainable practices since 1999.

The Chambal Safari Lodge has implemented significant conservation efforts, including the reclamation of 20 acres of forest and the protection of natural habitats for endangered species like the Gangetic River Dolphin. The lodge has achieved various sustainability milestones, such as aiming for 100% solar reliance by 2025, offsetting 5.87 tonnes of carbon annually, and achieving a water positivity rate of 37,400 liters per room night.

The collaboration between Chambal Safari Lodge and The ImPart Collective, an ESG consultancy, has resulted in a comprehensive report outlining the lodge’s best practices and accomplishments, setting a benchmark for eco-tourism in India. The report emphasizes the need for the hospitality industry to effectively communicate sustainability efforts to enhance their credibility and competitive edge.
