Foreign tourist arrivals to exceed pre-pandemic levels by 2025: Booking.com report
India’s inbound tourism is on a strong upswing, with over 9 million foreign tourists visiting in 2023, as highlighted in the latest Booking.com report. This trend is expected to continue, with foreign tourist arrivals projected to surpass pre-pandemic levels by 2025. The country’s rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and competitive pricing make it a top destination in South Asia.
In the first half of 2024, foreign exchange earnings (FEEs) from tourism reached USD 15.3 billion, reflecting a significant 17.6% increase compared to 2023 and a 5.5% rise from 2019. This influx is anticipated to generate around 58 million jobs in the tourism sector by 2033 and contribute approximately USD 512 billion to India’s GDP by 2028.
The report indicates that more than half (52%) of international travelers plan to visit India as a standalone destination. The top inbound markets include the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and the UAE, with metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru being popular. However, lesser-known destinations such as Hampi and Khajuraho are also gaining traction among travelers.
Despite the positive growth, challenges remain, including limited customization options and difficulties in seamless travel package arrangements. Initiatives like the “Chalo India” campaign aim to further enhance India’s appeal by simplifying visa processes and expanding international flight options.
