Ambitious plans for Swindon town centre following cinema closure

The closure of Cineworld in Swindon’s Regent Circus has sparked discussions about revitalizing the town centre, with plans for significant investment in the area. Council leader Jim Robbins emphasized the goal of creating a vibrant and bustling environment, as this issue has been a recurring concern among residents.

Details of the ambitious revitalization plan will be unveiled next month, following consultations with land and business owners. Robbins indicated that the investment could amount to hundreds of millions of pounds, although specific costs remain uncertain at this stage .

Swindon South MP Heidi Alexander is also establishing a Town Centre Task Force, aiming to address the issue of empty shops through temporary uses like pop-up shops . Local business leaders, such as Kris Talikowski, advocate for innovative approaches, including repurposing vacant spaces into music venues or similar community-driven projects .
